Here is how the government supports families

Families “are the most important thing in our lives” and also one of the nation’s most important resources, which is why the government supports families through all stages of life, the state secretary for families said in a post on Facebook on Sunday.

Marking the International Day of Families, Róbert Zsigó said the government set as one of its main tasks in 2010 to strengthen families and continues to work to make it as easy as possible to start a family and raise children.

Listing the government’s family support measures,

Zsigó noted the prenatal baby support subsidy that has been claimed by more than 216,000 families so far. The government also relaunched the home purchase subsidy scheme so families raising children can again receive home construction grants and subsidised housing loans, he added.

Hungary’s government spends around 3,500 billion forints (EUR 9.1bn) or 6.2 percent of its GDP on supporting families,

which puts the country among the leaders in international rankings, he said.

Former family minister was elected the first female president of Hungary

Katalin Novák was inaugurated as head of state on Saturday. She is the sixth president since the 1989/90 change of political system. Before, she served as family minister between 2020 October and 2021 December.

András Heisler, president of Hungary’s Jewish federation Mazsihisz, congratulated Novák on her inauguration as Hungary’s new president, in a letter on Sunday. In his letter published on the organisation’s website, Heisler expressed hope that Novák would be successful in her role as head of state and would strengthen the unity of the nation.

Heisler said Novák could count on Mazsihisz as Hungary’s largest Jewish organisation, as well as the country’s Jewish community.

He noted that Novák had said in her inaugural address on Saturday that Hungary was a safe home for the Jewish community. Heisler said joint efforts were needed to ensure that this remained the case. “We must protect our achievements,” he said, offering Mazsihisz’s partnership to the president. The protection of the Jewish or any minority community is a shared issue for every Hungarian citizen irrespective of religion, ethnicity or political views, he said. Heisler wished Novák strength and good health for her time in office.
